January 6, 2014 - Can Michael be saved?

Wom nah family!

This week went by faster than I thought.  I remember when I was still a greeny, Eld. Hatch told me that weeks will turn into days and days into hours.  It's so true!  Well, this week, Eld. Ferrin and I had been doing a lot of tracking and finding people to teach.

On Tuesday, we hiked up into the forest and we found this small shack at the very top.  We were curious and excitedly hurried up there and lo and behold we found a very sweet family.  A husband and a wife with a daughter, Mariah.  We talked and got to know them a little bit and they welcomed us to teach our lesson.

After we taught our lesson, we spoke more with the husband, his name is Michael aka "Word."  As we carried on our conversation, we learned something scary about him.  He confessed to us that he was an ex-murderer.  He told us he was known as the Lord of dealing drugs and even told us some worse horrific stories he had done which I will not share with you all.

It really broke my heart to see someone that has changed his life style will not be able to be baptized,   I wonder if people like Michael has another chance in the next life?  I'm sure the Lord is mindful of people like him and I will continue to pray for him.  The good news is, his wife and daughter are willing to listen to the rest of the discussion and hopefully they'll be baptized soon.

Other than meeting Michael and his family, we had a pretty good week.  We met almost all our goals for the week.  I love this work!

A scripture I came across this week that I would like to share with you all is about recognizing pride in ourselves.  Read with me:  2 Timothy 3:1-4: "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.  Without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good.  Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God."

Be ware of these things that we don't blind ourselves with the things of this world.  Pride is an awful disease to have.  It destroys the goodness in us.  I'm glad to hear about the topic of your ward conference, "Finding strengths through obedience,"  takes me back to that scripture 1 Nephi 3:7.  If you're asked to serve in a calling, asked to go on a mission especially for worthy young men, asked to keep all the commandments, I say just do it!  Life is easier to be obedient than choosing not to.  Blessings and miracles come through being obedient to the commandments.

Well, I'm still serving in Valencia with Eld. Ferrin.  My clothes are fine.  I eat well but starting up on our diet this week.  Suepauls, Matthew and Tashas always feed us with good Trini food like Roti...it's so super delicious.  We still go to a small cafe to use the internet to email you guys.  The coolest temperature it gets here is 75.

What's everyone's new year's resolution?  Know that I love and care about each and everyone of you.  Write to you soon.

Love,
Eld. Brown
